Clear Skin

Photorejuvenation

The natural consequences of aging on our skin include sun damage, freckles, age spots, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and redness caused by broken capillaries and rosacea. Photorejuvenation reduces these signs of aging using non-invasive, painless pulses of light to produce clear, vibrant-looking skin that you can be proud of.

Photorejuvenation NashvilleWhat signs of aging can be reduced with photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation can reduce the appearance of many signs of aging on our skin, including sun damage, freckles, age spots, acne scarring, enlarged pores, and redness caused by broken capillaries and rosacea. Treatments can also improve the appearance of birthmarks and uneven pigmentation.

How does photorejuvenation work?

Photorejuvenation works by using non-invasive, painless pulses of light to even out pigmentation, reduce redness and stimulate collagen growth for an overall fuller and younger-looking appearance.

Patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure, similar to the feeling of a rubber band being snapped against the skin.

Are there any special preparations needed before this procedure?

Patients should notify their doctor of any medications they are taking or any recent procedures, as these may interfere with treatment. Your doctor will advise you if and when medications should be discontinued.

In addition, patients with a history of scarring, bleeding, keloid formation or poor healing may want to reconsider treatment with photorejuvenation.

How long does recovery take?

There is no recovery time and a low risk of complications, an advantage over other treatment methods such as microdermabrasion and laser peels, which cause temporary redness and swelling. However, patients will need to protect their skin from the sun after treatment, as it will be more sensitive than normal.

How many sessions will I need?

Multiple sessions of about 20 minutes each are performed every few weeks until the desired result has been achieved. Results will be noticeable after the first few treatments and will continue to improve as treatment progresses.

Are there any possible side effects?

Patients often look as though they have a sunburn for several hours after treatment. There is a risk of mild swelling, blistering, infection and scarring after this treatment, although considered rare.

Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that causes slight redness on various parts of the face and, less commonly, on the neck, scalp and chest. Rosacea is widely considered a cosmetic concern or a medical condition, unless it affects the eyes, in which case certain medicines are immediately employed. Rosacea can also cause other cosmetic ailments such as rhinophyma. It is commonly triggered by specific environmental and behavioral prompts.

What are the symptoms?

The characteristic symptom of rosacea is redness of the skin. However, other common symptoms include:

  • Dryness
  • Swelling
  • Burning sensation
  • Eye irritation
  • Pimple-like blemishes

What causes rosacea?

Although there is no known definitive cause for rosacea, doctors have hypothesized it can be related to hypersensitivity of certain sensory neurons. This, combined with overactive intestinal bacteria that are otherwise benign, may cause a chain of events which lead to the display of rosacea as we know it. In addition, patients with rosacea have elevated levels of certain enzymes which are inactivated by several antibiotics that have been deemed effective against rosacea.

What can trigger rosacea?

The most common triggers for rosacea are:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Foods high in histamine
  • Spicy food
  • Sunburn
  • Cold wind
  • Sudden changes in temperature
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Emotional stress

How is rosacea treated?

Most mild cases of rosacea are left untreated, especially if they aren't cosmetically noticeable. Simply avoiding the triggers and taking extra care with the skin around one's eye is sufficient in these situations. If the redness gets worse or manifests on the eyelid, antibiotics like tetracyclines and metronidazole or more serious medication like isotretinoin may be prescribed. Lasers can be very effective at removing the redness associated with rosacea by vaporizing the blood vessels that cause it. This tissue is then reabsorbed by the body with no permanent damage. This procedure must be repeated periodically to destroy newly forming vessels.

Acne Treatments

Treatment for acne aims to reduce oil production and increase the speed of skin cell turnover to prevent new blemishes from developing, and to also reduce inflammation to help treat current symptoms. This can be done through a combination of topical treatments, antibiotics, isotretinoin (Accutane®) or oral contraceptives, as well as laser treatments.

We provide a wide range of acne treatments to help patients achieve clear, beautiful skin. Our doctor and clinical staff will develop an individualized treatment plan for you based on the condition of your skin and your overall health. These treatment methods can take up to eight weeks before results are visible, and acne may get worse before getting better.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes to produce healthy, glowing skin. There are several types of chemical peels available, ranging from mild to strong, each with different indications depending on the patient's current skin condition and overall goals. Peels can be combined with other procedures such as facelifts for a younger look. They may be covered by insurance if they are performed for medical rather than cosmetic reasons.

At The Franklin Center for Skin & Laser Surgery, we offer patients several different types of peels to help them achieve the results they desire with the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques. Included in our wide line of peels are the Vitalize Peel®, Illuminize Peel™ and Rejuvenize Peel™, all provided by Skin Medica, one of the top providers of high-quality skincare.

Illuminize Peel™

The Illuminize Peel effectively treats sun damage, wrinkles, brown spots and other signs of aging through a non-invasive superficial peel. Made of alpha-hydroxy acids, phytic acid and salicylic acid, the Illuminize Peel tightens the skin for noticeable rejuvenation within just hours after treatment.

This peel is ideal for all skin types and help to improve the clarity, color and texture of the skin for a more youthful and overall improved appearance. After treatment with the Illuminize Peel, patients experience little to no visible peeling and can quickly return to their regular activities with refreshed, vibrant-looking skin.

Vitalize Peel®

Vitalize Peel® is a strong but gentle chemical peel used to treat the effects of aging, sun damage and other unwanted skin conditions. Vitalize Peel® is the first and only peel that is suitable for all skin types, because it uses a safe combination of alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, resorcinol and retinoic acid. While the alpha-hydroxy acids are very effective in improving the appearance of the skin, they can also cause irritation. However, the combination of other substances leaves skin feeling gentle and fresh.

The results of a Vitalize Peel® are visible immediately, but repeated procedures are often used to reach desired results. Treatments last about 20 minutes each and are usually spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Vitalize Peel®s are performed by our clinical staff and involve only minimal downtime.

Facials

As we age, the rate at which our skin sheds and replenishes itself slows down. This leaves a layer of dead cells on the surface of the skin, contributing to an aged appearance. Facials help exfoliate the damaged layer to reveal the younger, healthier skin beneath. Some of the ingredients used can be natural fruits and plant extracts, essential oils, vitamins, collagen and elastin. Facials reduce the signs of aging and can also improve skin conditions such as acne, dry or oily skin, and uneven texture or pigmentation. Facials are tailored to each patient for optimal results.
