CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction Franklin
Since not all needs and circumstances are the same, Franklin Skin & Laser takes great pride in offering many options to help patients to look and feel their best.
In addition to liposuction, Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf and his team are equipped to deliver a number of newer, minimally invasive techniques to tighten and contour the face and body.
CoolSculpting® is considered a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Both methods are for those patients who are generally at or close to their ideal weight. They are not weight loss treatments. Ideal candidates may have deposits of fat on the thighs, back, sides, butt, abdomen, or upper arms. These pudgy pockets are notoriously stubborn, even with rigorous exercise and a proper diet.
Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting® lessens fat via cooling. Fat cells are unique. Outside stimuli, such as cold temperatures applied in a controlled manner, crystallizes these cells. The cells are later lessened from the body as part of a natural, safe process.
The cold that ultimately kills and lessens the fat is delivered with customized applicators. A flat applicator is designed to grab non-pinchable areas such as the outer thighs, whereas a curved applicator may draw up fat on the stomach. The applicator used also depends on the size of the area to be treated.
Liposuction removes fat via a suction technique. Dr. Bengelsdorf will insert a thin tube or cannula under the skin. This tube is connected to a vacuum-like device, which breaks up and flushes out excess fat and fluids. Since it is a surgical procedure, lipo involves needles and anesthesia. As with any surgery, there are risks including bruising and swelling. Downtime is necessary to heal properly and to avoid complications.
Since CoolSculpting® is not a surgery; you avoid the needles, anesthesia and associated risks. It is considered a “lunchtime” procedure. You may leave the office and then be on your way with work or other activities. Side effects are typically limited to fleeting redness, tenderness, and a tingling sensation.
Since CoolSculpting® works by stimulating a process that eventually leads to the death of fat cells, the effects are gradual. You may see visible results in as little as 3 weeks. Full results are typically seen within 8 to 12 weeks.
On the other hand, liposuction patients can experience a dramatic reduction of fat in the weeks following surgery as swelling subsides. With both lipo and CoolSculpting®, once fat is gone from a treated area it is gone for good. Fat does not move from another area and deposit in a treated area.
Not every patient is a candidate for surgery. Dr. Bengelsdorf will consult with you to determine which option is best. To find out more about CoolSculpting vs. liposuction, schedule an appointment at our Franklin TN office. Call Franklin Skin & Laser at (615) 595-8177.
